Rites of Passage

October 24, 2023

Dr Abdallah Rothman visited Kutubia, in Orgiva, Andalusia, Spain. In this talk he explores rites of passage from a grounded Islamic perspective based on the first principles of “‘aqida” and how that translates into living in community in any particular time and place through the practice of “futuwwah”.
Drawing from Imam Haddad’s book “The Lives of Man” Dr Rothman lays out the map of human existence, identifying the key transitional phases, or rites of passage, that each human being will pass through. This wonderful talk culminates in an analysis of the primordial master/student relationship whereby, in its authentic mode, the student learns to submit their “nafs” to the master allowing a unique heart to heart transmission to take place.

The formal talk ends at 1 hour 12 mins
Afterwards Dr Rothman takes extended questions from the audience.

The talk was kindly translated into Spanish by Suleiman Martinez.
